The orca is a magnificent creature. What most people don't know is that orcas are not whales! The question is, if their not whales, then what are they? Well, orcas are the largest species of dolphin! There are 3 different kinds of orcas: resident, transient, and offshore.

Life History

Habitat: 

Localized waterways, including bays and sounds

Reproduction: 
Gestation can range from 15 - 18 months. One calf is born once every 2 - 3 years.

Killer whales are the largest species of dolphin.

The dorsal fin of a male killer whale can grow as tall as 1.8 metres. Female dorsal fins are smaller.

The size of a resident pod of killer whales varies from as few as 3 to as many as 50 individuals.

Biologists can indentify individual killer whales by unique characteristics on their saddle patch and dorsal fins.
